乔尔(金·凯瑞饰)的性格没有问题,但他的生活却出了大问题——相恋多年的女友克莱门蒂娜(凯特·温斯莱特饰)突然变成了一个对自己没有丝毫感觉的陌生人。没有第三者的介入,只因为克莱门蒂娜在一次接受精神病专家霍华德博士(汤姆·维尔金森饰)的实验中失忆了,而所失去的又偏偏是对两人来说分外珍贵的感情经历。这一切对乔尔来说无异于晴天霹雳。

饱受情感折磨的乔尔想尽种种办法试图唤醒克莱门蒂娜那沉睡的记忆,可惜历经周折也没有任何结果,两人的距离在不断拉大。心灰意懒的乔尔最终拜访了霍华德博士,请求他也清除自己大脑中有关克莱门蒂娜的记忆,以消除那无法抑制的痛楚。

乔尔的爱情记忆逐步消逝的同时,那早已淹没在平凡生活中的初恋激情却暗自勃发,重新焕发了光彩。而霍华德博士以及他那三个荒诞搞笑的助手(分别由克尔斯腾·邓斯特、伊利亚·伍德与马克·鲁法罗饰演)虽费尽心机 ,但依旧没能成功熄灭乔尔心灵深处对克莱门蒂娜那份炽热的爱情之火。美丽心灵中那最后一抹阳光被永恒地保存了下来。

原来如此

数年以前,导演米歇尔·甘德瑞曾与一位朋友、著名艺术家皮埃尔·彼兹莫斯在伦敦某处共进晚餐。就在那个喧嚣中荡漾灵感的夜晚,彼兹莫斯突发妙想,“一个曾十分熟悉的人如果突然被从记忆中完全删除了,那么你是不是真的就不再与这个‘陌生人’联系了呢?”这只是故事的一方面,而另一方面则来自编剧查理·考夫曼。

就在这件事发生前后,甘德瑞阅读了查理·考夫曼那获得奥斯卡提名带有奇幻色彩的剧本《成为约翰·马尔可维奇》(Being John Malkovich),从此念念不忘,能与这样一位知名编剧合作拍片就成了甘德瑞一直的心愿。难能的创意与恰当的共事对象,终使他们走到了一起。“他的剧本感染了我。”甘德瑞很有一番感触。“很快,我就对如何拍摄这部电影有了更加全面的感觉,也成就了最初的轮廓。记忆如何影响到我们的生活,突然失去了生活中最最宝贵的回忆对人的打击,这些都是创作源泉之一。”

“米歇尔与我谈到了他的见解。”考夫曼回忆道。“问我是否想把这个创意变成实实在在的剧本,我喜欢米歇尔这个人,我同样喜欢他曾经的作品!”《美丽心灵的永恒阳光》就在这种理想与现实的交接中被精心打造而成,片名则摘取了Alexander Pope的诗句。制片人安东尼·布雷格曼用一向挑剔的眼光不无自豪地描绘了剧本的创造过程。“查理的剧本妙趣横生而又不失严谨。看得出,他把所有激情全部释放在剧本当中,每一份草稿都是心血的凝结。”最终剧本成型时,布雷格曼抢先一睹为快。“我马上给查理发了一封电子邮件,告诉他这就是我一直所企盼的爱情故事!”

众人拾柴

金·凯瑞领衔主演了这部融合些许惊悚氛围的喜剧片。导演米歇尔·甘德瑞把曾两获奥斯卡提名的金牌编剧查理·考夫曼的原创剧本变成的胶片。三次奥斯卡奖提名的凯特·温斯莱特,《蜘蛛侠》中的克尔斯腾·邓斯特,凭借《In the Bed》获奥斯卡提名的汤姆·维尔金森,《You Can Count on Me》中的马克·鲁法罗,乃至《指环王》中的伊里亚·伍德。如此抢眼的人气阵容居然只有3500万美元的预算,这也就怪不得其他制片人会心急眼热了。

睿智型音乐电视导演米歇尔·甘德瑞以其又一部心血继续着自己的导演征程。《美丽心灵的永恒阳光》中,他第一次尝试叙述式长篇描写以及一系列对美丽幻想的阐述。制作上的良苦用心还在其次,如何把众位影星融进戏中才是最难做到的。不善与演员打交道的他只能用自己的勤奋来激励他人的工作。制作完成后,剧组成员给予制作过程给每个人带来的自身提高以不吝其辞的赞美,享受着并工作着是不长圆的梦想。

聚焦

2003年的《冒牌天神》带来了8640万美元首映北美票房入帐,钱的因素对金·凯瑞来说意义重大。只有这种俗成的标准才能标识着他依然是好莱坞的头牌。表情,语言,乃至任何一个看似随意的肢体pose,42岁的金·凯瑞总能用尽所有能利用到的方式使每个人捧腹大笑,不能自已。喜剧演员那永远难以割舍的情怀,哪怕有了《楚门的世界》这等转型的经典阐述,也使他不会轻易放弃旧日的追求。与米歇尔·甘德瑞的合作在2003年就有了序幕,那时是《核桃派》。不到一年间两人再次联手,完工后的相互吹捧是过眼云烟,能否有所突破才是期望中的目标,不过金确实已经有了从喜剧向剧情发展的趋势。

视角

甜蜜与绝望相随,失去的心灵交融试图重新弥合。导演与编剧在不知不觉间把人带入了那种梦幻之旅当中。《美》可能由于太多的旁支错节而不能成为不朽的杰作,但这也不能忽视一个导演的进步。米歇尔的导演之路刚刚起步,也还需要更多的努力。此外,本片剔除了现实主义的印记,赋予生动鲜活的超现实主义以全新的着力点。并把乔尔心灵的迷宫勾勒成了一种类似狂乱视觉感的抽象拼贴画。票房不是问题,但它也不可能成为《成为约翰·马尔可维奇》与《改编剧本》那样的典范。
